Buying immigration consultations across Cook County and the collar counties

Paid search for an immigration practice fails in a boring way. The account spends, the form fills arrive, and the attorney hours go to people who were never going to retain. The fix is not a smarter keyword list. It is building the account around the two things that actually limit the firm: the hours your intake is staffed and the consultations your attorneys can sit. Everything else follows from that. Which campaigns run when, what a click from Naperville is worth compared with one from the North Side, what you exclude before you launch, and which number you argue about at the end of the month.

Call ads while intake is staffed, form ads for the overnight readers

Split the account by when a human can answer, before you split it by anything else.

An immigration inquiry at ten at night is real. The person is awake because they are worried. A call ad pointed at a voicemail box at that hour spends money and produces an unreturned message, which is worse than no ad at all.

Run call extensions and call campaigns only during the hours the phone gets answered by somebody who can book an appointment. Outside those hours, push the same budget to a short form that promises a callback in a stated window and then honors it.

Segmenting this way also gives you cleaner data. Daytime call performance and overnight form performance are two different funnels, and averaging them makes both look mediocre.

Do the same with days. Weekend inquiries from shift workers are common and most firms have nobody assigned to them. Decide whether you want them before you buy them.

The ad has to say attorney, price and language before it says experience

Every claim about years of service is competing with copy that answers the three questions the searcher actually has.

Someone comparing five results wants to know whether a lawyer is involved, what the first meeting costs, and whether anyone there speaks the language they are most comfortable in. Say those things in the ad and the wrong clicks stop.

Naming a consultation fee reduces volume and improves the calendar. If you would rather not put a number in the ad, put a number on the landing page and keep the ad honest about the fact that the consultation is paid.

Skip superlatives. Illinois attorney advertising rules constrain what a firm may claim, and it is worth having your own counsel review the ad library once rather than discovering a problem later.

Write separate copy for the relative. Ads addressed to somebody helping a family member read very differently than ads addressed to the person with the case, and both audiences are in the same auction.

Campus advising offices in Evanston and Hyde Park answer clicks you would be paying for

A large share of student-status searching in this metro is already handled for free by somebody on campus, and none of it converts for you.

Student visa questions, transfer paperwork, work authorization for students: universities in Evanston and Hyde Park run offices for exactly that. Those searches will still show your ad and they will still cost you.

Build the exclusion list before launch. Government and agency navigation, case status lookups, form downloads, free legal aid, job listings that mention sponsorship, and study-abroad content will otherwise take a meaningful slice of the month.

Add the ones specific to this market as you find them. Searches about county clerk paperwork, consulate appointments and translation services all wander into immigration keyword sets.

Review the search terms report weekly for the first two months, then monthly. The list is never finished, because the ways people phrase panic keep changing.

Buy the cost queries, because a price search filters better than any form field

Somebody typing how much an immigration lawyer costs has already decided to hire one and is only deciding who.

Most firms treat price searches as tire kickers and bid away from them. In practice they are further along than the person searching a visa category, because they have moved from what do I need to what will it take.

Send those clicks to a page that answers directly: how you charge, what a flat fee generally covers, what is not included, whether payment plans exist. A page that dodges the question sends the visitor back to the results.

Pair those with the second-opinion queries. People who have already met with one firm and are unsure convert well and cost less than the head terms, because fewer advertisers think to bid there.

Keep the emergency queries in their own campaign with their own budget. A detention or hearing-date search cannot share a budget with a planning search without one starving the other.

Bid Cook County and the collar counties as separate budgets, then let the forecast move them

The same click means a different thing depending on whether the person can reach your office without a car.

Set city and suburban geography as separate campaigns with separate budgets and separate landing pages. A click from Logan Square can be sold on an appointment downtown. A click from DuPage County or Will County is generally being sold on a video consultation, and the ad should say so.

Then let the weather move money. Hard freeze weeks and heavy snow reliably thin out appointment attendance for people making a real drive, and in most cases the sensible move is to shift budget toward remote-consultation messaging for those days rather than pushing office visits nobody will make.

Pace against consultation capacity rather than the calendar month. If the attorneys have four slots left this week, a campaign spending like it is Monday is buying inquiries that will sit.

Hold something back. Immigration demand moves with events outside your control, and an account running at its cap has no room to respond when it does.

Decide what your directory listings are buying before you raise the search budget

Most immigration firms in this market are paying two bills for the same click and measuring only one of them.

Directory profiles, lead marketplaces and pay-per-lead vendors sit in the same funnel as your search ads and are usually reported separately, if at all. Some are worth it. Some are selling you the same person three times.

Give every source a distinct phone number and require the intake log to record it. Six weeks of that will settle arguments that have been running for years.

Then compare on cost per signed matter, by case type. Cost per lead flatters the cheapest and worst sources, and cost per consultation still hides the ones that fill the calendar with files you do not take.

Feed the real outcome back into the platform where you can. An account optimizing toward form fills will find you more form fills, which is not the thing you are buying.

    Questions we actually get

What should we spend to start?
Enough for one case type in one geography to gather real data, rather than a thin spread across everything you do. A budget split six ways produces six campaigns that never leave the noise. Pick the matter type with the best economics and the intake capacity to support it, run that, and add campaigns only when the first one is understood.
Are Meta and other social platforms usable for immigration ads?
They can be, with a caution: platforms restrict targeting on categories tied to immigration status and personal circumstances, so plan on broad targeting and let the creative do the qualifying. Social tends to produce awareness and inquiries earlier in the decision than search does, which means a longer path to a retainer and a different measurement window.
Why are our clicks so expensive?
Legal is one of the most competitive auctions there is and immigration terms sit near the top of it. Cost per click is not the number to manage. Cost per signed matter is, and it improves mostly through better exclusions, better landing pages and faster intake rather than through bidding down.
Should we bid on our own firm name?
Generally yes, and cheaply. Directories and competitors bid on firm names, and the searcher who types your name is the most valuable one in the account. Watch the cost, because it should stay low. If it does not, something else is going on worth investigating.
How do we count a result when a matter signs months later?
Record the first contact date and the source at intake, then report on cohorts rather than calendar months. A January cohort keeps signing into spring. Platform reporting windows are too short for this practice area, so the spreadsheet the firm keeps will usually be more honest than the dashboard.

    What is different here

Immigration is federal practice, so a firm's reachable market is far wider than its county, and paid social and professional-network targeting tends to matter more here than local search alone. Two local realities still shape the work: the immigration court and field office a client is routed through, and a client base that frequently searches in a language other than English. Bar advertising rules still apply, and the field is unusually exposed to unauthorised-practice operators, which raises the bar on how a real firm signals legitimacy.
